The island is divided into three districts. The first most northern is mountainous, the central is undulating and the third southern as low-lying. There are more than 200 villages scattered in the verdant environment on Corfu island. The first is Corfu Town, the capital of the island located on the center-east side, with its Venetian architecture and 2 fortresses.
On the North you can find the towns of Sidari one of the most popular tourist resorts, Kassiopi a small fishing village, Lakones a traditional village, Skripero a small village but with fantastic views, Ano Korakiana known for its ceramic art, folklore music and its many churches in this area.
On the West you can find Vatos surrounded by lush greenery, Liapades is the 3rd biggest village with a traditional settlement, Auliotes above the bay of Agios Stefanos, Pelekas with the best sunset and more.
On the South you can find Agios Matheos located on the slopes of a hill, Benitses a calm fishing village, Lefkimi the 2nd biggest village, Argirades a large picturesque village on the slopes of a hill, Kavos a top destination, and Moraitika, Perivoli and Petriti all three offering a quiet environment and natural settings.
With the shape of a sickle, Corfu counts up to 57 beautiful beaches that are found around the island, such as Paleokastritsa the most popular one, Agios Gordis, Nissaki, Korission Lagoon, Agios Georgios, Marathia, Kassiopi, Sidari, Glyfada and more, which visitors can visit all year round.
The characteristics of all these beaches are the lush greenery, mountainous background, the dark blue-green colors and crystal clear waters. Most of them organized, with water sports centers, luxurious hotels by the sea and close by restaurants.
There are a number of activities to do in summer season, such as diving, windsurfing, kite surfing, enjoy water sports, spend the day at a water park and hiking as there are many old footpaths that cross Corfu and lead to Venetian castles, mountainous villages and secluded beaches. During the other seasons you can have a great experience participating or watching festivals and local events, like the throwing of ceramic pots from balconies at Easter time or visiting a local Winery and tasting different wine accompanied by finger food or cheese. Enjoy a day at a spa center, or at a Fish Spa center for a pedicure treatment, in Sidari, Benitses and the old Town of Corfu. There is also a casino, a golf and tennis court or you can just go sailing around the nearby islands and explore them too
Once in Corfu, you can buy many local products at shops found all around the island, but mainly in Corfu Town, where the majority of the shops are. There are variety of shops that you can buy almost anything, like traditional Corfu treats, handmade leather sandals, jewelry, ceramics, Olive Oil products like soap, souvenirs, worry beans (komboloi), wooden handcrafts and paintings. There are also many boutiques, a Soap factory and antique shops.
At noon or in the evening you can stroll along the wonderful paved street that is a copy of Rue de Rivoli in Paris, eat at one of the many restaurants and taverns found anywhere on the island or drink your coffee around the most famous spot in Liston Avenue in Corfu Town. Do not neglect to try out some of the local dishes, like Pastitsada, Sofrito, Strapatsada and Savoro. Also the delicious spoon sweets and the liqueurs made out of kumquat and bergamot oranges.
You can travel to the island with ferry services from Patra and both traditional ferries and advanced retractable airfoil, hydrodynamic-flow, high-speed ferries called “Flying Dolphins” from Igoumenitsa, or by plane via Athens international airport, Preveza or Thessaloniki.
With a ferry, from Igoumenitsa to Corfu it takes 1-2 hours, while travelling from Patra to Corfu it takes about 7 hours.
Corfu is also connected by ferries from Italy and by air from some European countries.
